Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve is a compelling, philosophical romance novel about two people who meet by chance, become friends, and ultimately come to the realization that although they are both married, they are soulmates. It starts with one of the main characters contemplating suicide. He is unhappy in his life and when he meets Ellie, he begins to feel alive again. Ellie gives Neil her favorite book which therefore changes his life. They become friends while they write letters to each other, which turns into emails and phone calls. Their souls connect in friendship and over time without meaning to, they fall in love. Neither Ellie or Neil are happy in their marriages and feel trapped; however, Ellie has a son whose happiness is a priority to her which makes leaving her husband difficult.

A positive aspect in this book that I’ve found was that it was beautifully written. The author did a wonderful job of showing how the characters were feeling throughout the book. Neil’s wife, Fay, did love Neil and she was heartbroken that he had fallen in love with his friend. Jake, Ellie’s husband, was portrayed as an arrogant, abusive, and conniving man who viewed Ellie as a possession of his. The way the novel was written I was able to understand how the two main characters had become unhappy in their marriages. Another positive aspect of this novel was that Ellie and Neil portrayed how love is more than just a physical connection and that their souls were a reflection of each other.

There were no negative aspects of this book as it was very well written. It seemed to be edited professionally, as I was unable to find any mistakes. The story was clearly portrayed to explain that soulmates do exist, even if you find yourself married to the wrong person and unhappy in your life.

I would recommend this book to mature readers who enjoy a good romance novel that contains minimal sexual content that is not explicit. I would also advise readers that there is a mention of attempted rape, as though it may be a trigger for some people.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Overall, it was an amazing novel that starts with a friendship that blossoms into a romance. It was interesting to read the character developments and how they realized the people they were married to were not their soulmates and the difficulties of not wanting to hurt those who were involved.
