This short prequel starts with Olivia Pappas. She has never been in a happy relationship with a man and her current relationship is yet again another failure. While at a resturant in Paris, she sees the most beautiful woman she's ever seen in her life. As she leaves, she tells the woman she is gorgeous, and the woman promptly invites her to a lesbian bar later that evening. That evening was the most magical night in her life. She had never been sexually fulfilled until that night. She breaks up with her boyfriend the next day, using her new love Fairuz to turn a possibly ugly situation into her favor and stays with Fairuz, engaging in the week of her life. Towards, the end, the couple talk about their cultures and how their cultures impact what happens. The line i thought was most powerful was, "You conform to culture. Culture doesn't conform to you". Ultimately Olivia has to leave to go back home and the prequel ends there.
Like I said, the book itself was "interesting". The thing I noticed while reading this was the really strange similes and metaphors. For example, when describing Fairuz's breasts, Olivia describes them as filling her "hands like binoculars". That just was so jarring and got rid of any romantic mood the previous descriptions were setting up. It was just so WEIRD. Some other examples include "erect like the pistil of a flower" and "slurping [Fairuz's clitoral juices] down like Japanese noodles". I actually laughed at the last one, but in my opinion kills the mood. But what do I know about romance? Also, the language used at times was very juvenile, but I'm not sure if that's the norm in books like this were slang for sexual terms are constantly used.
However, overall the writing was solid. The characters seemed pretty well developed and you can tell there's a dark past to Fairuz. Also, I got the vibe early on that Fairuz was trying to manipulate Olivia, but I'm not sure at the end. Maybe that can be used in the later books. The descriptions were very descriptive. It definitely suits this sort of novel as the descriptions of how beautiful Fairuz is, or how Olivia looks in a particular pair of panties really enhance the novel. I'm not sure it would work in a different novel, but the level of detail is nice in this sort of genre. However, the book seemed very fast paced and a bit farfetched, but it didn't take much from the actual story.
Overall I'd give this a 3 out of 4 stars. While I liked the characters and description, some of the similes and metaphors really just detracted from some scenes in the book. The overall plot seemed a bit fast and far-fetched. However, it was much better than what I thought a romance novella would be. I especially liked the talks regarding culture and how they played into their relationship. Overall, solid read, made me more open to the romance genre in the future.
