Midwinter turns to spring is an alluring romance novel about Savannah Curtis, a talented painter, and Alfonso Madrigál, a flamenco guitarist. Their path crosses when Alfonso seeks to authenticate a painting his late grandmother left for him which he believes could be one of Picasso’s painting. From the moment Alfonso sets his eyes on Savannah at an art lecture her unusual beauty and aura captivates him. Their journey is one filled with hope, loss, sacrifices and most important love.

The novel begins with an introduction of Savannah and Alfonso long after their first encounter and then switches to the beginning of their love journey. This is what I first liked about Maria Veloso’s novel as Savannah and Alfonso’s love story is intriguing from the get go and as the plot develops and their journey progresses Maria Veloso’s style of writing drew in me and filled my curiosity. This novel is truly a page turner as it had me writing into the break of night. Secondly the main characters in the novel and their experiences are described in great detail thus bringing Savannah and Alfonso’s love journey to life. The themes carried throughout the novel are what make Midwinter turns to spring an extraordinary novel as they are mind provocative and question many morals, perspectives and views.

This book was so good that I didn’t find anything that I did not like about it. However, I think people who do not care or appreciate art will somewhat lose focus throughout the book as Maria Veloso’s style of writing truly captures all elements and focuses on fine details of every piece of art mentioned. This should however not discourage non art lovers to read the book as it is overall an exceptional read.

I would recommend this book to adults who enjoy reading romantic novels that are mind provocative .This novel is one filled with the challenging of many morals and sacrifices and is ultimately a profound read for romance novel lovers. Due to the themes mentioned in the book I would not recommend it to be read by children.

I rate this book 4/4 because of how well structured and detailed it is. The punctuation and grammar throughout the book are good with no typing errors except for some irregular use of the comma in certain stages throughout the book. Maria Veloso’s novel is a profound novel that I enjoyed reading and I would highly recommend it.
