Having this type of parents can affect your whole life negatively. I hope things turned better for her.

The novel appears to be compelling and highly emotive. The author had a rich life filled with experiences yet was forced to mature too young. I particularly admire the book's message, which demonstrates how to react to life when it seems like everything is going wrong. Congratulations to the author.

It's not easy to grow up without parents' love and care. Having a wicked stepmother makes it worse. I fell for the author and her story almost take tears from my eyes. However, I would like to know how she managed to wade through life. Congrats to the author on being the #BOTD!

What a fantastic book! In her memoir, Allison Hong Merrill is brutally honest. The difficulties and setbacks the author experienced after immigrating to America only made her stronger. In fact, according to me, the book supports the value of family. Well done.

This book is a memoir with a romantic twist. It would make you appreciate growing up with the love of a father and the care of a mother. Congratulations BOTD!

I was astounded that this was a memoir and not some fiction novel. I'm sure it's hard for the author and her sister to experience such pain and abandonment. I'm looking forward to read this book and learn more about their experiences.

"Ninety-Nine Fire Hoops" by Allison Hong Merrill. An interesting emotional book, talks about the author's story Allison Hong Merrill who a Taiwanese girl, growing up without having a fatherly and motherly care. This is one of the things parents fail to show their children when they are young. Alison and her sister Dee managed to survive all by themselves. Uncle Liu later took them as family. Congrats on your #BOTD.

I’m looking forward to digging into this novel to find out how Merrill faced all the difficult and heartbreaking challenges and survived. I’m intrigued at the title. I like reading memoirs because of the learning and this one seemed to be right up my alley.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting memoir about a young Taiwanese woman who, in an attempt to escape the verbal abuse and neglect inflicted on her by her parents, decides to join the Church of Latter Day Saints. There she meets the man whom she would marry and take her to America. The only problem is that this man makes her life a living hell and leaves her in America where she can barely speak English. How will she survive? It might be worth a second look. Well done.

I don't typically read memoirs, especially those with a religious theme. So this book isn't for me. Nevertheless, congrats to the author on BOTD.

The first page of this book grabbed my attention, and I can't wait to continue reading it. I'm glad that against all odds, Allison does come out strong. She sounds like a true survivor. Thank you for your recommendation, and congrats on BOTD.

How long does it take to heal from the emotional damage that has been caused your whole life. And most of all by your parents. I need to finish this book. I would love to know what happened with Allison and Dee.
