A long dark rainbow by Michael Tappenden is a book about an old retired artist by the name of Alexander James who lives a lonely life in his flat; he is immersed in this artistic world often conversing with various artworks. His life changes when he bumps into Samantha Reagan, an old crush of his in a bookshop. They soon fall in love and choose to move in together. They live a life of intimacy and pure bliss but unknowingly to them, it is about to be interrupted by Alex’s past that comes back to haunt him.

Their happy relationship is punctuated by the return of his long-lost daughter Georgia. Her return is followed by a dark period in Alex’s life where his closest friends begin to perish or become ill. Georgia proves to be an imposter that wants to turn Alex’s life upside down. This set of events causes him to pause and question his past looking for answers. Was what he thought happened long ago all a lie?

The author offers a graphic representation of the settings of the book, often describing with intricate detail the environment of the book. This allows for the reader to actualize or create a clear mental picture of the book's settings as well as take on the journey together with the casts in the book. There are often monologues in the books that offer an introspective view of the various characters in the book.

The book has 951 pages which at first I thought were too much but the book’s plot, twists, and settings have you on edge wanting nothing but to know what happens next. The pages seem to pass by faster and with no time find that you’ve finished the book. It is certainly a book that you do not want to put down.

I rate A long dark rainbow 4 out of 4 since aside from a well-written plot it is professionally edited and therefore lacks any errors. This book stands out in its genre since it explores geriatric intimacy which is often overlooked thus challenging the boundaries of love as we know it. It has a language that is simple and can be clearly understood by the reader.

I highly recommend this book to those romantic lovers who appreciate good intimacy since it is highly erotic. It is certainly for mature readers who understand the concepts of love and the myths associated with it. It offers hope for lovers that there is always love even at later stages of life.
