As Maggie and her husband Desmond approach the first anniversary of their marriage, Maggie finds herself questioning his strange behavior. While she understands Desmond's need to travel for business, his lengthened absence is causing her to ponder what's going on with the newly acquired vineyard. The winery Desmond was named the executor of requires his help to have a successful harvest, but Maggie also needs him.

When Maggie visits the vineyard with Desmond, mysterious events and the questionable actions of the long-time caretaker make Maggie even more ill at ease about the property. After tragedy strikes one stormy night, how will Maggie tell Desmond the truth about what happened? And will Desmond ever tell her what's going on at the rundown property? Discover the answers in Promise of the Heart by Susan Berry.

The beautiful cover of this romance novel initially caught my eye. The blossoming tree in the picture reminded me that despite the snow outside my window this blustery April weekend, the promise of the new beginning of spring is not far away. The message of restoration in relationships and the hope of things to come was my favorite aspect of this book. I loved how the author used the drama of deception to create tension throughout the story and how the characters had to learn to be honest with each other. As the young couple learned to trust each other, I appreciated the healing in their relationship and the satisfying ending that followed.

This 160-page book was the perfect weekend read with its short, engaging story. I enjoyed how the author added a bit of suspense without making the novel uncomfortably violent or dangerous. While the caretaker's actions were mysterious and the stranger who arrived on the property was suspicious, I never felt like the main characters were in overwhelming danger. I also adored the slightly annoying but well-intentioned sister who supported Maggie through the ordeals. It was hilarious how Jilly always seemed to have the unfortunate timing to interrupt Maggie and Desmond every time they found a private moment for intimacies. Jilly's intrusions didn't leave much space for sensual content, but that might be preferable for readers who like a clean story that only alludes to sexual activities.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more backstory and emotional development to the relationship between Maggie and Desmond. I would have liked to see more of their history before the book's events and more emotion behind their exchanges, but this didn't drastically affect my enjoyment. The main problem with the book is the number of errors. I found quite a few more than the ten-error limit. Therefore, I give Promise of the Heart three out of four stars.

This cozy romance would be excellent for readers looking for a quick weekend or beach read. The ending should give its audience some warm feelings and a renewed sense of hope, and there was no swearing or erotic content. The allusions to sex between the married couple were moderate and left the specifics to the reader's imagination.

A lot of mysteries, nice. Couples should not keep things away from each other. I wish them both the best with their secrets. Nice review, aroused my curiosity.

Sometimes troubles, like whatever was happening at the winery, can bring people together.

I enjoyed reading your succinct review.
