Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve is a phenomenal love story between two characters who are trapped within their own lives and starved by the wonder of love greater than the ordinary. The book starts when an act of kindness is shown between strangers and hope is rekindled in both of their lives. Ellie, a common woman, enters a bakery to pick up cream puffs and soon realizes they are out. The man behind the counter insists on her taking the box he reserved for himself. In return, Ellie gives the man a copy of her favorite book, Atlas Shrugged. From there, love and light entered both of their lives.

At the beginning of the book, Neil’s character is described as hopeless, tired, and on the verge of suicide. He made a promise to himself that when disgust and boredom were all that was left of his life, he would end things. Fay, Neil’s wife, is a weary woman who sees the dull man her husband has become. Their sharing of bodies at night is the one attribute of their relationship she clings onto in hope that the man she once knew is in there somewhere. Ellie is a gentle woman with a great mind. She feels as though she has no one to talk to that understands her love for philosophy, poetry, and the concept of life. Her husband, Jake, is a wealthy man who spends most of his time at work or doing his own monotonous hobbies. Ellie and Jake’s relationship is connected by a little boy named Johnny, their son. Since Jake is extremely wealthy, Ellie has the leisure life of doing as she pleases and taking care of her son.

Neil and Ellie share a desire for something greater than the ordinary. They are both starved of passionate, raw, fulfilling love. They begin to write letters back and forth to one another filled with knowledge, philosophy, poetry, and honesty. As weeks go by, they admit to falling in love with each other’s minds. Jake and Fay both become weary of their marriages and how quickly things change with their spouses. As time goes on, Neil admits to Ellie that he wishes to leave his wife, but he is ashamed of the pain it will cause her and feels selfish for wanting such a thing. Ellie also admits she wants to leave her husband, but for the sake of her child she must stay. Things quickly begin to unravel in both marriages as conflicts arise and the truth comes out. Divorce is the answer to both marriages, and soon Neil and Ellie find themselves together with no guilt or remorse.

My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. It was a fantastic read that gave readers hope for soul-miracle love. Neil and Ellie’s relationship signifies captivating, unrelenting love with a basis of patience and understanding. I encourage those who are looking for a fulfilling love story with a lot of depth to read this book. This book was exceptionally well edited, and I found nearly no errors. Profanity and mild sexual content were both included in this book, and for that reason, I will recommend this book to young adults.

Neve certainly has a way with words and the way she explains the feelings of the characters throughout the book. Due to the detail that Neve puts into her writing, readers have a clear understanding of how each character feels and their own personal struggles. For example, Jake’s jealousy is so strong in the book that you can practically feel his resentment through the pages. This emphasis that Neve puts on the other character’s feelings shows how the shifts in life can affect everyone around.

This book was filled with such depth that it was heart-wrenching to read about Neil and Ellie’s raw love for one another. Their love for each other was strictly a mental connection rather than a physical one. After they started writing letters to one another and talking on the phone countless nights, they stopped seeing each other in person. I believe this is such an important detail in the book because it shows that the physical part of a relationship isn’t always everything. Neil and Ellie longed for the next time they would see each other because they had forgotten what the other looked like. Neil’s patient and understanding mindset towards Ellie is enough to have you crying through the pages. This book will give readers hope for a love that is captivating and entirely consuming.
