The book Midwinter turns to spring by Maria Veloso is a beautifully written book about a young woman who struggles with being a perfectionist and an artist. She loves freely and without exception. She falls in love with a flamenco artist, but does not fulfill her wish to be married to him because of his marital status and the fact that she is engaged to be married. She engages in an affair with the artist, which leads to her pregnancy. She runs away because she gets reminded of the heartbreak she faced as a child when her dad left her and her mother at a young age. Not only that, but she leaves heartbroken, and the artist suffers as well. They meet 26 years later, and they find themselves still in love. They went through pain and sadness but they eventually get together in every way that counts.


I love the book because of the articulated explanations on the flamenco culture. I love the diction, the tone and the overall plot of the book. It exposes its readers to the issues one faces when in love. Love is not a bed of roses and the book shows this in detail. The book was also not rushed. The places, emotions and entertainment described in the book were exquisitely done and helped me feel present physically to some extent in the book. I love the characters in the book because of the various character developments, evolution of feelings and heightened emotions. The book addressed some problems people face when in love and was realistic, which made the book fascinating.


I got a little confused because the book though engrossing got confusing. This book has both the accounts of past and present events, however when reading the book I could not immediately link some events from the past to the present until I got past a certain point, but I still enjoyed it.


I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 because it is relatable, teaches lessons about culture, patience, endurance, and love which transcends all understanding. The book was professionally written and well edited. It was a terrific read and an insightful book.


I would recommend this book to anyone who believes in love, who wants happiness for others and would not mind if they don’t find for themselves. I would also recommend this book to those who feel love has let them down but still believe in love and need encouragement to pursue their heart desires.
