Midwinter Turns to Spring is a novel written by Maria Veloso. It tells the love story of Alfonso Madrigal, a Flamenco guitarist, and Savannah Curtis, an art consultant and appraiser. Their story is discovered when Cassidy moves into the apartment that Savannah had once lived in and finds Savannah’s diary hidden in a drawer. She is immediately intrigued by their story and when it abruptly ends, she tries to track them down to find out what happened between them next. Her own recent heartbreak motivates her to help them.

There are many positive aspects to Midwinter Turns to Spring such as the characters themselves. Veloso created characters that have great depth with well thought-out backgrounds and experiences, especially the main characters, Savannah and Alfonso. Savannah is a strong-willed, independent and caring woman whilst Alfonso is a charming, respectful and thoughtful man. The journey of watching them fall in love leaves the reader with a bitter-sweet feeling. The experiences that they allow each other and the places that they go to are so beautifully described by the Veloso that you could almost picture yourself in the book with the characters.

There are also some aspects of the book that I didn’t like, one of them being the infidelity of certain characters. Cheating is a touchy subject that may offend a few of the readers. The situation between the main characters is not ideal and certain points will have the reader very much on edge in anticipation of the consequences. However, there are no major bad points to the book as the character’s genuine emotions come through well and the story is well told.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is mainly because the story between Alfonso and Savannah creates this nostalgic feeling about romantic relationships and inspires a need for love in its reader. The story is well-paced and the opinions expressed by the characters are greatly varied; characters were able to express their different opinions well with one another. The characters are easy to relate to, even for those whom have not had similar experiences.

I recommend this book to people whom enjoy the slow-building romances. Even though the characters fall in love relatively fast in the book, their relationship only really develops to where they are openly in love with each other much later. The process of them finally getting to be together is slow and long.
