There are many ways to love people. In some cases, love and friendship get tangled. But what happens when you blur the lines between the two? They can be downright impossible to separate. In Looking Glass Friends by E.L. Neve, Ellie and Neil explore the meaning of love and the barriers that come with it. The characters experience infidelity, suicidal ideation, domestic violence, low confidence, and so much more. Throughout the story, you will see how friendship can open the door to so much more.

One positive of the book was how the author brought the characters to life. Each main character had a backstory that allowed you to get to know them. The author makes you think about what draws people to each other and consider what we look for in others. I enjoyed how the reader can relate to these characters. I could feel the sadness, the desperation, the isolation, and the hopelessness felt by the characters. What they were all going through was powerful. The author has a way with words. I love how it’s not your traditional love story. It’s messy and complicated. The story reminds you how little control you have over who you love and when. The author starts the story with friends and shows how connection can grow and become so strong that it’s everything you need. I loved how the author incorporated the pen pal aspect into the storyline. It shows you how much deeper a connection can become when you can think about what you want to say to a person.

The only thing I disliked about this story was how long Neil and Ellie stayed with their spouses after realizing they didn’t love them anymore. Sometimes I was so mad at the characters for making what I felt was the wrong choice. I became emotionally attached to these characters and believed they should be together. To witness the unnecessary pain and suffering was frustrating.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 because it appeared professionally edited. I found minimal errors that didn’t distract from the flow or organization of the storyline. That is why I didn't deduct a point. The author kept me wanting more. It was difficult to put the book down once started.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance stories. I would suggest a more mature audience due to the sexual content. A more mature audience would appreciate and understand the intellectual content better. How the author incorporated poetry and philosophy was stimulating but may be difficult for a less mature audience to grasp.
