Review of Stolid
Stolid by Aaron D Key is a novel about a guy by the name of Stolid. One rainy night he was on the highway trying to hitch a ride but no one would stop, and it seemed he would be out in the rain for the whole night. When one car finally stopped, Stolid was overjoyed to be in the warm, comfortable car that he fell asleep. When the car came to a stop, he awoke and found that they were no longer on the main road. The strange man seems to know him, but Stolid cannot remember him. The stranger tries to jog his memory saying they used to be lovers once. This book takes a look at the protagonist's younger life in his search for love.
This book focuses more on the emotions of the characters rather than their actions. I could tell the author put a lot of work into developing his characters. According to the dictionary, the word stolid is an adjective which means calm, dependable, and showing little emotion or animation. The character Stolid embodies the word perfectly. I liked how calm he was and he seemed very mature for his age. Another positive aspect of this book was that tensions were always high, and the book was suspenseful. From the moment the main character made contact with the first side character, I was intrigued to know how the story would unfold. The author made this book a captivating read and held the reader's attention to the very last page. Meeting a total stranger who seems to know everything about you is very intriguing.
The writing style was simple and easy to follow. I did not find anything to dislike about this book. I found it to be quite a relaxing, slow-paced read. Following Stolid on his journey in search of love was an exhilarating, but sometimes sad, one. Being gay back in those days seemed to be anything but the norm, so the protagonist was always seeking love and validation from people around him. There were some funny moments in the book, especially when the narrator would talk to himself.
While this was not a fast-paced book, it was highly suspenseful and dramatic. I will give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The editing of this book was exceptionally well done. I did not encounter any errors while reading.
This is the type of book to read on a cold, rainy day whilst sitting by the fireplace. I would recommend this book to persons who like reading slow-paced books that appeal greatly to their emotions. Also, if you like romance stories, this is a book you might enjoy.
