Heartburn: The Dream, is an exceptional novel written by M.C. Hekim. This book does not seem to fit under any one particular genre because it offers such a unique mix of science fiction, romance, and horror all at once. This is one novel that will cause the readers to endure a wide array of emotions, from spine-tingling terror to heart-warming joy, this book is the complete package.

Unlike the many other books that I have read in my life, the prologue of this particular book was one of my favorite parts of the story. Usually, but not always, prologues are relatively uneventful glimpses into part a certain character’s life or event. However, the prologue of this book is what turned this literary work into a shining gem. It offered a different point of view which foreshadows and shares a terrifying secret about one of the characters with the readers as well as adds a refreshing dose of horror to counteract the romance in the novel. Even days after reading the prologue I found my mind constantly drifting to it. At one point, I was even too terrified to close my eyes for long periods of time. Then again, I am a chicken and can’t even bring myself to watch a scary movie. Nevertheless, the author succeeded in transferring such strong emotions from the words to the readers, which is very challenging to do.

The story follows the lives of two students, eightteen year old Grace and twenty two year old Ben. Grace is shy and spent her whole life watching from the side-lines as all of her high school friends fell in love, but she had never experienced it for herself, until she meets Ben. Ben is a handsome, genius, and mysterious man who suffers with heartburn. He never fails to keep surprising Grace. More soon than later, these opposite forces begin to feel an attraction towards each other. However, there is just one small problem: Ben is asexual.

Will Grace take the hard path and try to make things work between her and Ben, or will she take the easy way out and call it quits?

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that Ben is also a time traveler from the future?

I adore the way the author manages to intertwine certain concepts of biology and genetics to back up certain points in the story. The author creates a perfect harmony between the two different subjects of writing and science. Also, I liked how the author was able to create such an intelligent character, such as Ben, without him sounding like a dictionary or too over-the-top. That truly shows what incredible skills the writer possesses.

Unfortunately, this book had many grammatical errors that managed to confuse me while I was reading. Additionally, the ending was a bit complicated and I found myself having to pause for a moment and reread a couple pages for the second time to understand what was happening. But then again, maybe I lack the mind power Ben and the author must have in common. Also, I wish that the author described the physical characteristics of the characters more, so that it is easier for the readers to image the story playing out in their heads.

In the end, despite the grammatical errors and the rather complex ending, I can still give this book 4 out of 4 stars because throughout the whole journey, I was yearning for more and the numerous surprises never ceased. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone over the age of thirteen, only because some scenes are rather graphic in nature.
