In the first few chapters of Looking Glass Friends, E L Neve gives us an outline of two married couples who, over the years of their marriage seem to have lost their way. Both couples, Neil and Fay, and Jake and Ellie, still love each other but neither feels they have very much in common anymore. Then, one day, a kindness over Cream puffs and then a book begins a story of finding friendship over emails.
Neil and Ellie begin to write to each other every evening, discussing the book that Ellie gifted him. The friendship they start to build encourages them both to take a look at themselves within and they start to realise they both want more from the life they have. They have been honest with their respective partners about their friendship but haven't told them about how they are beginning to feel for each other.
Because they are both married to other partners there is a lot of soul-searching needed to be done before they can realise and then commit to the possibility that they were meant to cross paths. We learn of the turmoil in both characters' minds regarding the lives they already have and what they wish to dream of having.

The reader of this book is taken into a poetic world whereby both Neil, and Ellie, reevaluate their belief of what a soul mate means to them and what the consequences of being true to themselves would mean to their respective partners. It has been beautifully written to take us into the minds of the characters, to try to understand their beliefs and fears.

I found the beginning a touch confusing at first. Unsure of who each character was married to, but after rereading the first couple of chapters I quickly resolved this. This would have been my only real negative to say about the book.

I am giving this book [4 out of 4] as I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was beautifully written and the poetry gave me food for thought as I was reading it through the eyes of the characters, and at the same time, I felt it was encouraging me to evaluate my own life.

I would recommend this book to readers of Romance and Poetry. Put the two genres together and this is a book that draws you in and captivates the senses encouraging you to get into the minds of the characters as you read it.
