Review of Edge of Destiny
Edge of Destiny by Phil Brown is a story that talks about the love between two young teenagers, Theo and Claudia, in the 1930s. It shows the complete normal progression of couples, from the admiring to the talking stage and then the dates to being exclusively together. This is how it is for Claudia and Theo till the looming war threatens to break apart their love and relationship.
Things take an unexpected turn when a silly experiment over gravity and time leads Claudia to lose Theo. Theo, by some unexplainable forces, finds himself in the future. He is lucky to meet Rick Jarvis, who occupies his home in the future. Rick Jarvis and a couple of other people try their best to help Theo. Are they successful in the end? Does Theo eventually find his way back to the love of his life, Claudia?
The writer, Phil Brown, has a beautiful way with words. His explicit description and narration of places, events, food, and everything else are fantastic. Added to his prowess in descriptions is the use of figurative expressions to drive points home. However, all and sundry might not understand this use of figurative expressions. Only a few with its knowledge will comprehend the writer's contextual use. For instance, the sentence, "The beet could have been a hapless crime victim." Relating food to a person is beautiful but might not be understood by all if not read carefully.
There is the express and almost-too-much release of knowledge in specific fields like physics, horse racing, chemistry, etc. This, no doubt, portrays the writer as knowledgeable or having done much research before writing this book. But, it also makes the book quite boring for readers who have no interest in these fields, as the highly detailed information on each field reads like a class or lecture. A little explanation of each is okay, but there is an expansive explanation that will not sit well with some readers.
Edge of Destiny also had a progression of events that were relatively slow and tiring to follow. There were unnecessary scenes, like the narration of Claudia's physics classes at college and the scene involving a lady who always came to bet at the horse racing game. These particular scenes had little to no relevance to the plot. These scenes dragged the story on and would tire any reader. The history talks and how they were related to the story were okay. However, they didn't seem to interest me.
Asides from these, the writer gave a completely unexpected twist that revived my anticipation. The twist brought about another one which gave a confusing ending, leaving me with questions and assumptions about what must have happened.
Considering all these, I would not recommend this book to individuals with a short attention span, as the plot dragging would bore them out. I would recommend it to lovers of knowledge in all fields and advocates of young love. Upcoming writers would find this book beneficial as they'd find the description and figurative expressions helpful. The editing was okay; there were only a few errors. Looking at the book holistically, I'd have to rate it two out of four stars.
