Review of Looking Glass Friends
In Looking Glass Friends, E.L. Neve poetically depicts the tale of two friends who fall hopelessly in love with one another after connecting through written exchange. Though it begins both innocent and platonic, the pair bonding over their shared love of poetry, philosophy, and all things intellectually stimulating; Ellie and Neil find themselves at a crossroads when they come to the realization that their current marriages fail in comparison to their soul connection.
I found this story utterly intoxicating from start to finish. What I enjoyed the most, was how well written it was as the author uses beautifully crafted imagery to suck you right into the characters’ world. It was easy to get lost in this novel, and each chapter had you hungry for more, almost as if you had to devour the story in one sitting to know what happens next. The use of poetry, metaphors, symbolism, and philosophy also added a nice touch that really made this novel one of my favorite reads. It posed thought provoking questions, as well as endlessly quotable lines that really made this book one worth going back to.
Moreover, it was quite difficult to find anything to critique about this story. I found one or two very minor errors, but other than that it is apparent that it was edited with both care and precision. Perhaps, the initial exchange between Jake and Fay could’ve given the reader a little more or have been a little less gross, but it is understandable that Jake is that type of character, so to make the delivery less harsh would’ve been doing a disservice to how awful he truly is.
Overall, I’d give this book 4 out of 4 stars, since it is truly a work of art. The characters undoubtedly come to life, and it feels as though the reader really gets to know them and watch them grow. As always, I love strong vocabulary, and the word choices in this piece of writing are genuinely impressive. I appreciate all of the thought that went into it because it is clear that the author is not only a powerful writer, but a poet nonetheless.
As this novel has some sexual nature and extensive vocabulary, I’d recommend this book to anyone 18+, as well as those who love a good romance novel. I do want to heed warning that there is an instance of sexual assuault described that may trigger some readers, but generally speaking I do believe this is a book most will enjoy. Anyone who relishes in getting lost between pages will be quickly entranced by this beautifully illustrated love story.
