“A woman you love torments you, and you her, a most ancient concern. It amuses me to see how little the core human has changed.” This is one of the most hilarious yet insightful dialogues in this book. A Grave Commitment by R. Brintnall is a book in the romance genre with certain supernatural elements.
Brian Cooper is a devoted single dad and a school teacher. His favorite summer ritual to explore the wild uninhabited islands of Northern Lake Michigan might just make him an useful companion for Christina. Christina is beautiful, energetic, and well, almost a century old. Christina has regained her mortal body to complete a mission. She has to find the lost cemetery of the House of Benjamin hidden in the remote High Island and release the souls trapped there. However, not all souls want to be freed from their earthbound existence and one such soul has found out that the only way to regain mortal life would be to have Christina’s blood. Will Brian confess his love to Christina and save her or will Christina have to depart from the mortal world, a second time?
It is apparent from the book that the author has researched well on Lake Michigan and its history. The book has interesting characters. Brian is understandably afraid of commitment, with all his past failed relationships. Christina, on the other hand, belongs to an older time period, therefore for her marriage is a must. Their courtship is fun to read with modern customs meeting traditional ways. Christina is eager to learn, adapt and be part of the present century. It is entertaining to read about her mishaps with electric appliances, like the dishwasher flooding the kitchen with soapy bubbles or overheating biscuits in the microwave.
There are other interesting characters or spirits rather, as well, like some whimsical pirates, a philosophical shaman and an insolent teenage girl. These spirits add to the quirky element of the book and the Island having its own independent nature spirit adds to supernatural element in the book. Brian’s sons are part of the entertainment quotient in the book, with Cutter’s innocent lack of tact and Aaron’s extraordinary powers.
At the base of this romance is the issue of commitment and some unearthly misunderstandings. The book makes for a fun read with the meeting of two different timelines and a few ghosts thrown in for humor. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars for its quirky, somewhat supernatural, romance
