Patricia Catacalos weaves a unique romantic paranormal story set in 1855 in her book entitled An Appealing Apparition (Paranormal Series Book 1). This is not the quintessential paranormal story that involves horror, bloody scenes, or a devilish plot. It's all about romantic love with a slight paranormal element. She will take the reader back to a time when communication, medication, and transportation took so much longer than they do today. Readers will also know the sacred value of marriage way back in the middle of the 19th century with the involvement of parents or close kin unbeknownst to a bride for betrothal.

One night, a handsome man doesn't know how he goes into a beautiful lady's bedroom and is watching Portia while she is sleeping. Portia felt a presence of energy in her room and was startled by a man with tantalizing violet eyes. Suddenly, he was gone. She doesn't believe in ghosts, but she notices him again in a translucent body form. The man is trying to convey something to Portia, but Portia can't hear him. Portia discerns that her apparition needs help. She began searching for and analyzing who the man was. She wonders and feels that they are connected. There is one man she knows who might be on his deathbed, and this could be her blood brother. Meanwhile, Charles discovers that Nate, his best friend, has an illness, but visitors are off-limits. Portia sneaks out and finds out the translucent man's dilemma: he is poisoned by arsenic mixture. Charles is protecting Portia's image and is hesitant to give his consent for Portia to help the dying Earl because he knows this man is a womanizer. Will Charles succumb to Portia's plea? Will Portia's image be ruined? Helping a sick man may endanger a woman's image.

When Portia was visited by a ghostly man, it thrilled me. It is a bit surprising because the author creates a beautiful masterpiece of an "astral traveler man" paired with a strong-willed woman. It makes the storyline more engaging when the main character possesses an extremely sacrificial idea in trying to save someone's life. Furthermore, the fact that Portia is eluding her mother, who is forcing her to marry, makes the book more fun. She goes anywhere to escape from a marriage-maiden matchmaker, which amuses me more. Plus, she's also visiting her cousin Charles, who is also trying to find a suitable husband for her as a task from her aunt Harriet, which enthralled me further.

I really enjoyed the romantic drama in this story. That's why I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars because the romantic plot is new to me and entertains me well. The translucent man and the physical man possess different characters, especially when this man is communicating with Nurse Wickham, which adds a tingling sensation to the readers. Plus, readers will obviously notice the good development of the supporting characters. I appreciate the characters' matching speech to their behavior, which projects a realistic image of people in the past century.

The book is free from errors and has an excellent writing style. It has a good transition between past and present scenarios. Readers will not be lost in the past scene because of the author's way of narrating it, which makes this book exceptionally well edited. I least like it a bit in the absence of action scenarios, which will make the book more captivating if there are any. Lastly, I recommend this book to those who like a romantic novel with a touch of paranormal plot. Anyone who enjoys a narrative about the previous people's way of life may enjoy this book, too. Those who like to know how society dealt with marriage, courtship, or friendship long ago will learn many things in this book.
