Summer Storm: Haunted By You, by Tori Del Ray, is a steamy summer beach house novel revolving around young adults in America’s wealthiest 1%. The book aspires to arouse the reader while introducing some characters who are much deeper than the book ever had time to explore and I have to admit that it was to a large degree successful. As a reader I was intrigued just as much by the hinted-at elements of the characters’ backstories as I was by the erotica the book is clearly intended to deliver.
Dane, a wealthy and depressed young man, is successfully wasting his life moping around the sunny beach house he’s lived in for the past nine months when his troublemaker of a younger sister arrives to stay. Megan has proven to be too much trouble to be left on her own for the summer, and their parents are away on a long vacation, so Dane is stuck with the undesirable task of keeping her in line. However, she’s got her own plans concerning how she’ll entertain herself during the summer- her new “friend,” Summer. Summer, for her part, bears just a little too much resemblance to Dane’s lost fiancée Crystal- the reason Dane has been keeping himself cooped up in the summer house for months in the first place.
From here, the book takes a predictable but enjoyable turn as Dane and Summer interact, and Dane tries to separate his feelings for Crystal from this new, younger girl who has entered his home unbidden. Will Dane be able to tell the new girl apart from his lost lover, or will this new blossoming romance be snuffed out by ghosts of the past?
As always, I feel that issues of grammar and mechanics should be addressed in a review. Summer Storm could use a little more proofreading, but overall I was very impressed by the writing style and overall lack of errors found in this book. Tori Del Ray clearly has some skill with the pen, and it showed in her work. Furthermore, though the book spent a lot of time talking explicitly about sex, the descriptions of the characters and their actions were usually tasteful and respectful rather than downright filthy. Though that isn’t a feature that matters as much in erotica, I was pleasantly surprised.
Overall, Summer Storm successfully meets its goal of being an interesting, arousing story set on the beach, and any grammatical issues don’t detract from its overall value as a story at all. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
