Kissing Frogs is a short romance novel written by Lisa Burdziejko. It is about 133 pages so it is a pretty easy read. This book is about a middle-aged woman named Ethel Funt who is a devoted single mom who is feeling lonely after her son moved out for college. She decides to get back into the dating scene by joining an online dating site only to find out that the game and rules were not what they used to be when she last dated.

I found that the authors plot and concept for the basis of this novel has a lot of potential. Ethel’s journey to finding her prince charming in the modern world is something that almost all women can relate to. Many of the incidents that happen to her have happened to me in real life so I felt like the author almost took some of the dating scenarios from real life experiences. Reading all her dating misadventures brought a smile to my face. That being said there were a few major problems that I could not get past to give this book a good rating.

One of the major problems that I had is the writing style that the author chose was not suitable for the intended audience or genre. It was overly simplistic and something that I could accept in a children’s book but not in an adult romance novel.

Another problem I had with this book was the lack of proper secondary character development. The author mentions Ethel Funt son in various part of the book but did not give the reader enough background on his personality or anything notable that the reader can relate to. I do not even recall his name. Although it is noted that Ethel’s son is a very important part of her life early on, if the author had spent time developing the character more, the book could have had more depth.

Each chapter is about a new guy she found online to meet and go on dates with. Towards the end of the book, I was beginning to count the pages to see when this was going to end. Although the author describes the events very well, the reader does not get any information on how Ethel is actually feeling. The book just moves on to the next event. There are also no transitions from one chapter to the next to ease the reader in.

Although I liked the concept of the book, due to the problems stated above, I rate this book 1 out of 4 star! Without some major edits to the writing style and character development, I would not recommend this book.

Although you didn't give this book a good review, I appreciate your honesty and constructive comments. This book was a guilty pleasure, meant as fun. Others who have reviewed it gave me only positive feedback, I think to save my feelings. Pointing out the flaws and honesty is more helpful and appreciated. Thank you. It really is more a collection of bad dates than a novel. I will keep this post in mind if I ever decide to attempt writing again.
