Second Nature by Marie Lavender is the first book in the Blood at First Sight Series. In this book we follow the story of Desiree and Alec. Alec is a vampire with a conscience who has been around for a very long time and has learned the best ways for him to be able to live and feed by his own set of rules. Love does not factor into a vampire’s life. Desiree is a very special human, who has been burned by love in the past. Can they heal each other, or will their past experiences keep them apart?
I liked the way the characters interacted with each other and others throughout the story. The way that the dialogue itself was written, I believe was done well. You could almost get a real impression as to how they were feeling. Ms. Lavender was able to use the dialogue to paint an intricate picture of the surroundings as well. There seemed to be a meticulous amount of details to paint the picture of the scenery.
What I did not like about this story is how long and drawn out everything was. While I appreciate that the dialogue was done well, for me, it was done too well. There was too much dialogue about things that were not essential to the story itself. I also felt that Alec and Desiree acted very infantile at times. They made major decisions on the spur of the moment, with very little fore-thought put into it, and it seemed to that they had severe communication issues.
I gave this book a rating of two out of four stars. The story itself wasn’t really to my liking, but I can see others enjoying it. I found it to be too drawn out, with not enough action. I believe that if you are the type of person that really likes to have the scenery and all of the surroundings described to you in great detail, then this book is for you. That same meticulous amount of details that was something that I did like was also part of the downfall of the story for me. I think that a lot of the scenes could have been done just as well but with less explanation of what the surroundings were like.
For me there was just too much scenery description going on. There were also intense and intricate descriptions of what the characters were feeling. When I read, I like to be able to use my imagination for the majority of the story. I like to be given a brief description of what the surroundings look like, or what the characters may be feeling, and then I like to imagine the rest for myself. Part of the fun of reading, for me, is making up the pictures in my own head.
