[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Love of My Life" by Alice Kovalsky.]
The Love of My Life: Alice’s Love Letters to Diego is written by Alice Kovalsky. It takes us through the beginning of Alice and Diego’s story and how they met. Then it delves into some of Alice’s past relationships and how this relates to Diego and their relationship. It also discusses her spiritual experiences and ways that she is working to improve herself. Because it is all written from a first-person perspective, we experience her emotions surrounding all of these things.
I appreciate the vulnerability within the book. There are moments of positivity and happiness intermixed with moments of anger, sadness, and hurt. This makes the book realistic and relatable. There are also pictures after each chapter. These are enjoyable and match the feelings and themes of each chapter. I also appreciate that the sexual scenes throughout the book are not too graphic.
There are a few negative aspects that need some discussion. The first is that the book needs another round of editing. It is not professionally edited. There are more than ten errors within the book, which is unfortunate. Most of these errors are pretty simple. There are also some formatting issues between paragraphs throughout the book. Another downfall is that the overall purpose of the book is difficult to interpret. It jumps around between topics within the book and doesn’t really follow a set plot or plan. More explanations and background information throughout the book would be helpful.
The book is listed as a Christian romance on Amazon, but I don’t think this description is accurate. A Christian God does not seem to be talked about at all within this book. I would instead suggest this book to those with an open mind about sexual and spiritual experiences. There are several scenes that describe spiritual experiences where Alice visualizes herself in different scenes. Almost all of these turn sexual in some way. The book is not intended for a young audience based on these scenes. It also has some triggering content such as rape, so those sensitive to topics like this should be cautious.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. I have to take off one star for the lack of editing and another for the overall presentation of the book with the issues mentioned above. It definitely has some positive aspects to it, but there is room for improvement. As written, I do think that those with an open mind could find some enjoyment in this short read.
