[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Shooting Stars" by Skye Bothma.]
‘Shooting Stars’ by Skye Bothma is a romantic novel. This book revolves around Catherine and Jake. Catherine is a receptionist at a lawyer’s office and doesn’t particularly enjoy her job. When the story begins, she has just broken up with her long-time boyfriend, David. David dumped Catherine and chose another woman over her. This broke Catherine’s heart. Jake is a famous actor who is thriving in the world of films. He also has his problems that usually arise from being a public figure. After a session at work, Jake decides to take a vacation in Hawaii to recuperate. On the other hand, Catherine was supposed to go to Hawaii with her ex-boyfriend. Despite having just broken up, she decided to take the trip to Hawaii alone. This is where love sparks. Readers find out about how their paths cross and what happens to them afterward.
The descriptions in this book are excellent. As soon as I started reading the book, I was mesmerized by the portrayals of Hawaii. The writer has strongly attempted to share with the reader the exact experience of the characters in Hawaii. The sights, smells, and sounds have been illustrated perfectly. These have also been romanticized by using properties like fairy lights and fountains. It felt like I was in Hawaii and enjoyed what the place had to offer. The writer has used the descriptive style of writing in various other parts of the book too. For instance, the scenes in an airport have been thoroughly explained through the eyes of Catherine. I knew that the descriptions would be something that I would enjoy throughout the book.
This book also has some humor that I enjoyed. Various difficulties faced by Catherine, when she landed in Hawaii, are described sarcastically and humorously. This is important in keeping a light mood. Otherwise, her situation can seem extremely dim. As a reader, my mood wasn't affected by her situation because I could laugh about it.
My favorite part of this book was the first meeting between Catherine and Jake. This scene has been written with the utmost perfection. The moments leading up to their meeting made me feel extremely excited. The drama surrounding their meeting felt exhilarating and perfect. The description of the scene from both their perspectives added to the enjoyment. The introduction of Jake as a lovely man began here. Readers who enjoy a dramatically romantic first meeting will feel the same way.
Another thing that I liked about this book was the comparison between David and Jake. We read about Catherine’s thoughts when she makes these comparisons. She thought about how she stayed in her relationship with David despite all the red flags. Readers may relate to being in a toxic relationship like the one David and Catherine had. Just like Catherine, individuals may stay in these toxic relationships while giving the toxic partner the benefit of the doubt. This book acted as a reminder to me. A reminder to check my relationships for toxic traits. It also reminded me of how well individuals must treat their partners.
I loved this book so much. I just finished reading it and I feel ecstatic. This is how this book has left me feeling. Readers who enjoy a romantic novel must read this book. It had everything that excited the romantic in me and left me wanting more. There was absolutely nothing that I disliked about this book and nothing needs improvement. Apart from a few flaws in the editing, this book is perfect. Therefore, I would rate it four out of five (4/5) stars.
