"For the love of Suzanne" by Hudecek-Ashwil Kristi is a time travelling romance novel with a little bit of history. It features two people, Suzanne and Cody Black Fox, whose lives collide and intertwine into a memorable story about love and survival. Suzanne is a regular woman who was in an abusive relationship with her husband, Beau. She is a strong woman who gets her fighting spirit when she decides to leave her husband on discovering she's pregnant. Cody lives 155 years, in the 19th century, in the past. He's a religious half breed, Chiricahua and white, a dangerous and difficult combination in those times. He's also an Indian agent who is trying to ease tension between the Indians and the white people. He's a smart man who knows what he wants and look for ways to get it.
The excitement begins when Suzanne goes back in time and meets Cody. They were both confused based on the difference between the time each belongs to. On accepting that she's a person of the stars, Cody decides to give her to his chief, Tall Deer, in order to make up for helping one of the chief's slave to escape. However, he can't follow through when he discovers Suzanne is pregnant, but decides her best chance is with Annalee and not the cruel chief.
Things begins to go downhill when a lieutenant at the fort she's staying discovers she's an acquaintance of Cody. She's charged with conspiracy to cause a mutiny and treason. From treason and mutiny charges to chief Tall Deer's slave and to efforts to escaping, the story kept up a very fast pace through the very cold territory. Between constant tension among the Indians and whites, Suzanne, a pregnant white woman, travelling with Cody, a half breed injun, struggles with the attraction between them and survival. Will the aggressive Indians, excessive cold, and general hardships of that time become too much for Suzanne and her child? Will she able to go back to her time before the delivery of her child? Will she be with the man she loves in her world? Will she and Cody know how to get back to her world, and will Cody go with her? Disappointment, pain, fear, and easy love abounds plenty in this story.
The story was written in the third person perspective and I enjoy reading it. Suzanne is a woman who experiences a lot of pain and obstacles, and this compels the reader to pull for a happy ever after for her and Cody. I found myself wanting to see her rise above her insecurities. Cody's mixed breed gives him a difficult and dangerous life from which he pulled through and make something of himself.
One of the things I like best about this story is the easy love between Cody and Suzanne. Also, the storyline and characters are beautifully written. The characters of Suzanne and Cody are very interestingly drawn, while the characters of others are pretty basic and simple. There was a bit of a stretch in a few scenes where the book drops all sense and reasoning. Though it is expected in a time travelling book, but dropping all logic and reasoning, Kristi stretches the plot a little. The reference to God explains the stretch and it's believable as long as you believe in miracles.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the play with the culture clash, it's fast-paced and exciting telling. With casual and conversational tone, the story was easy to read and understand, and the suspenseful scenes made the book difficult to put down. It is well written with no errors or grammer problems. I will recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance and does not mind a bit of out of the world experience.
