[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Listening to Songs at Midnight" by Kewayne Wadley.]
Listening to Songs at Midnight was authored by Kewayne Wadley. The book is in the genre of poetry, especially poetry about love. Kewayne expertly crafts each poem, addressing specific aspects of love. From disclosing how most feelings do not have words to describe them to capturing those moments when one falls in love without counting the cost, the author leaves no stone unturned when it comes to love. From enjoying and cherishing every moment with one’s love to fighting the desire to put a price tag on everything in life, these poems will leave the reader inspired, informed, and captivated.
I am a huge fan of poetry, especially poems that can capture my imagination and enable me to experience whatever the persona is experiencing effortlessly. One of my favorite poems in this book is titled ‘What Is Love’. The poem reveals how, often, love comes when it is unexpected, often offering what one needs but not always what one wants. Sadly, sometimes love leaves as soon as we see it. Also, true to Kewayne’s mission to spread love and inspiration through the power of words, one of the poems perfectly addresses what liberty of speech is all about.
The major downside I encountered was that while the collection captivates, a drawback surfaces in certain poems where ordinary language eclipses poetic expression, diminishing their impact. This, however, reflects a personal preference. Consequently, these poems were not as striking as those that primarily employed poetic language. Equally, apart from the minor errors I encountered, my suggestion would have been to have a nice blend of poems focusing on both romantic love (eros) and platonic love, which would then align perfectly to spread love.
Owing to the factors above, I rate the book three out of five stars. Another round of editing will definitely lead to a higher rating, as the deduction of the stars is primarily due to the errors. Ardent fans of poetry will definitely enjoy reading this fascinating book.
