Review of As You Prefer
Garrett Gibson is a rare necromancer who finds himself wrapped around the fingers of a mysterious Sanguim, Alexandru. A Sanguim is an immortal being who hunts and murders necromancers. Despite their differences, Garrett and Alexandru develop an understanding unlike any other. What are Alexandru's motivations for sparing Garrett's life? Is Garrett completely safe from persecution?
As You Prefer is an urban fantasy novel written by Cie Gives. It involves magic, faeries, and immortal creatures. The book focuses more on the relationship between Garrett and Alexandru than the magical world in which they exist. My gripe about this book is the lack of significant world-building at the beginning of the story, which makes it hard for the reader to imagine the environment the characters are situated in. As the timeline shifts from the past to the present, the execution doesn't feel quite seamless, which makes following the pacing of the story somewhat confusing. I also find it hard to relate to the characters. With a premise that feels predictable, there is nothing interesting to look forward to about the characters. On the other hand, the plot follows a formula that is typical of heterosexual main characters, like individuals from opposite origins falling in love. But I like how the book subverts that by featuring homosexual protagonists. The dialogue and the exposition flow and are free of any grammar errors. This fact led me to believe that the book has flawless editing. The story culminates in a cliff-hanging resolution, which leaves room for anticipation for the next book in the series.
For the writing and the characters, I'm giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. Some points were deducted owing to the issues mentioned above. I recommend this book to anyone interested in modern fantasy involving queer characters. You might want to give this a try despite my criticisms, as we all have different preferences.
