Review of Holding onto Hope
Holding Onto Hope by Taylor Ann tells the story of an abused woman. Jemma fell in love with a man, Matt, whom she thought was perfect. However, once she moved in with him and agreed to marry him, he became abusive and almost killed her. However, a stranger intervenes, and Jemma has hope for the first time that her life can be better. Will Jemma find happiness and peace? What will happen to Matt?
This book is both a devastating picture of abuse and a depiction of hope. At the start of the book, Jemma feels hopeless and trapped in her relationship with Matt. He has cut off everyone else from her life and controls where she goes. If she fails to comply with his demands, she knows the consequences will be severe. However, upon her rescue from his abuse, Jemma begins to learn that she can have a life free from suffering. She also begins to fall for one of the men who rescued her. The potential for a meaningful relationship is on the horizon.
I appreciated the author providing the point of view of both Jemma and the love interest. Though the entire first part of the book is through Jemma's point of view, later on, it begins to switch. This added a more well-rounded view into the developing relationship and gave an outside perspective on Jemma as she struggled to recover from the mental and physical abuse she had endured.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Due to the number of errors, I am taking off one star. While the errors were minor, often spacing or capitalization mistakes, there were more than ten. The book could use additional proofreading. The errors were the only negative about this book. Holding Onto Hope will appeal to fans of romance. It does contain strong language and depictions of abuse, so more sensitive audiences should keep that in mind. There is no explicit sexual content, however. The book was so engaging that I finished it in a single sitting. I highly recommend this one!
