Review of The Girl with Autumn Eyes
The Girl with Autumn Eyes by R.F. Vincent is a romantic comedy narrated by a young man who had a difficult start in life. R.F. Vincent is an award-winning author and a professor of physics and space science.
The main character was found in a dumpster when he was abandoned as a newborn baby. He was brought up by foster parents and missed out on a loving family life. At one point, he says he has never received a Christmas present. The struggles he has faced have left him with social anxiety. He is living a modest and secluded life when something happens that changes his outlook. When riding through the countryside, he sees a young woman on a bridge and falls in love. Will he get the chance to meet this young woman in the future? If he does, is there any chance she will fall in love with him too? Something has changed for the young man and he starts to experience life in a new way.
The book’s cover and title are lovely and relate well to the story. The writing style is eloquent and humorous. The story is told with pace and energy. There are some imaginary happenings, including a story of being visited by Winter as a child, talking squirrels and his alter ego, Electro Man, who has the confidence he doesn’t have.
The main character is believable and authentic, with a sense of humour that lightens the story. He has a lovely attitude to life and the reader roots for him. Despite not having friends before he has the ability to be a true friend. The other characters are well-drawn, including his eccentric neighbour.
This book is funny, but I sometimes felt the humour was overdone. I would have preferred it to be toned down a bit. However, I’m sure other readers will appreciate the comic side of the book.
The Girl with Autumn Eyes would appeal to readers who like quirky characters on a journey of self-discovery. The editing is flawless. I have taken one star off for the point made in the penultimate paragraph, and I award this book 4 out of 5 stars.
