Clay’s entire life is inside of The Order and being dispatched for a mission is, normally, nothing unusual. This mission, however, very quickly deviates from his norm. This time, he is sent to confront a woman, one he soon discovers that has been haunting his dreams for as long as he can remember.

Asha is hiding away from the world. A world that would molest everything Asha treasures and believes to transform her into a soldier and use her gifts of fire to destroy. Now it seems that a new enemy is presenting itself. A tyrannical organization calling itself The Order.

As Unbalanced by Courtney Shepard progresses we are introduced to not only Asha but her three sisters. Each sister possesses a psychic ability to control an element. Then Courtney challenges you by introducing four unique male counterparts to each female protagonist. With eight individual characters, you may worry about a convoluted storyline, but this author weaves her tapestry such that the stories converge seamlessly, and nothing is lost. Every character has a story that begins to unravel through the pages of this book, drawing the reader deeper into an engaging fantasy world.

What is so interesting and enthralled me so completely is the action in this book. I know it is listed as a romance novel, but the action scenes are spectacular. There are times I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering how the characters are going to survive, as they are forced to fight with every ounce of strength they could muster. Courtney Shepard does a very good job illustrating just how destructive a pyro power can be and shows that Asha is truly a formidable opponent.

I cannot wait to see where Courtney Shepard takes each of her characters after Unbalanced. Although this book is only 249 pages, this author’s narrative skillfully and completely achieves Asha and Clay, as well as the six other side characters. She flawlessly creates each character, actively maintaining each persona and history so perfectly that I rarely found myself needing to discern one person from another. This book is fast-paced, loaded with romance, action, mystery, and family. The author adds enough details that her world comes to life and the reader is blissfully engaged. Hands-down, I give this book a four out of four-star rating.

My only complaint is that I want more. I want to know more about The Order and each sister. I assume this is the author’s intent, being Unbalanced is a series, and more details will emerge as the story unfolds. So, I will just have to wait, with bated breath, with everyone else who has read this book
