One Way Or Another by Mary. J. Williams is the first instalment in the sister’s quartet series. Each book follows the lives of the Benedict sisters. Andi, Calder, Bryce and Destry. Four Sisters. One unbreakable bond. This first book follows the life of Calder Benedict. Although it’s a series, they can be read as stand-alone novels.
Calder Benedict is a smart, independent woman, she’s had to be. She has a strained relationship with her mother, Billie Benedict. Watching her go from one husband to the next, six to be exact, including that of Calder’s absent father. Her mother is the epitome of a privileged rich girl. There are only two things Billie Benedict cares about, her money and finding her next husband. Her father hasn’t been the shining role model either, only spending two months out of the year with Calder during the summer. Yet another adult in her life that has been motivated by money. Calder has four people she knows she can depend on no matter what, Her sisters and Ms Finch the cook, housekeeper slash motherly figure. The men that seem to gravitate towards the Benedict sisters only ever seem to be after one thing, their money. So when Adam Stone enters Calder’s life, she has to figure out if his actions are genuine or if he has an ulterior motive.
The author has set Calder out to be this beautiful, privileged rich woman. Yet she's so much more. She is laid back, down to earth and definitely not afraid to get her hands dirty. The authors set out this book written in 3rd person, but instead of just following one character through the story, we follow two. Calder as well as Adam. It’s easy for the reader to follow, there is no confusion on which character you are following and when.
I like the way the author has set Adam and Calder up, instead of them meeting and jumping head first into a relationship there is a slight tension, between them. From this slight tension, they go to flirting with each other, then go forward to having a few dates and getting to know each other. They have their witty banter, and they seem to bounce off each other, which is amusing for the reader. Too often in romance books, the character’s meet, then jump straight into bed with each other. There were minimal explicit scenes, for once an author hasn’t blurred the lines between romance and erotica.
There genuinely wasn’t anything I disliked about this book. It unravelled at a steady pace, which makes it easy to follow and understand. The details and descriptions were great. It had just the right amount of drama, enough to keep me from being able to put this book down. There were a couple of minor errors for example: Billie wide smile, when it should have been Billie's wide smile. Nothing to really interrupt the readers’ flow.
I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. I just couldn’t find anything to fault this book on. Even though there was a couple of errors, I felt they were not significant enough to deduct a star. I would recommend this book to all the romance lovers out there. I am excited to start the next book in this series!
