One Way or Another by Mary J. Williams is a romantic read with a sense of mystery twisted into the story line. The story focuses on Calder Benedict, her three sisters Andi, Bryce, and Destry and their mother Billie. The Benedict girls are part of New York City’s most elite social scene. Their social standing, as well as their family fortune creates quite a challenge when finding potential relationships. Billie Benedict, mother of the four girls, seems to have the most trouble in the romance department. Billie has one failed marriage after another, in total six marriages and is now working on having her most recent divorce finalized. She is a party girl at heart, and believes she can make any man fall for her. The sisters do their best to keep their mother out of trouble but her latest love interest, Ingo Hunter, may be more than they can handle.
Calder has also had her share of disappointing relationships, but things begin to look up when she accidentally meets Adam. Adam offers some gentlemanly assistance when Calder needs an escape from a bad date. Although their initial meeting is a chance encounter, their paths cross again and this time they begin to start a relationship. Although Adam has caught Calder’s interest, he still has to prove to her and her sisters that they can trust him. The younger Benedict girls will need all the help they can get to convince their mother that her new boyfriend is up to no good. Hunter has made advances towards all of the younger Benedict girls and now has focused on Billie.
Williams creates likeable and characters the reader can relate to in the younger Benedict sisters. Each sister is down to earth and shows women who want to be successful in their own individual businesses, regardless of their family’s fortune. Even Billie, who can be a frustrating character, is still relatable because at one point or another everyone has crossed paths in life with someone similar in personality. Calder’s relationship with Adam is more realistic than fairy tale and is a completely believable situation. Williams has a straightforward writing style that also gave this book great readability. It would appeal to several different demographics of readers and would make a great beach read!
There were no negatives I found to this book. The story line was a perfect blend of romantic and mystery, and kept the reading interesting. The suspicion of Ingo Hunter continues to build throughout the book and is a clever way to interest the reader into the next book of the series. Billie gives the reader a look into the frustrations of growing up with a mother who cares more about herself and her eternal youth than her children. This is an underlying main theme in the book because the sisters are so close and have strong family values, even though they all have different fathers and essentially an absentee mother.
After finishing One Way or Another, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Mary Williams found a realistic way to write a fairy tale romance with a happy ending while still continuing the plot on through the end of the book. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series and figuring out the end of the mystery. I would also be interested in reading other literary works by Williams.
