One way or another by Mary J. Williams is in every sense of the word, a love story, but not just of a romantic love. This story depicts the love and true bonds of sisters, it illustrates the love between a mother and her child, and love between friends. It is a story that proves you do not have to be blood, to be family.

Protagonist, Calder Benedict, is one of four insanely successful sisters’, born to their socialite mother Billie, who, after several failed marriages, cannot seem to give up her quest to find a true and lasting love. Sisters and a mother the girls may share, but a single father amongst them they do not. This slight twist lends layers to the story line, which helps keep readers intrigued and engaged, curious to discover the other secrets the Benedict sisters hold.

Calder, a born and bred wealthy woman, finds herself inexplicably drawn to Adam Stone, a man with the opposite upbringing to herself. He is not her typical man of choice, but something about his blue eyes draws her in. Adam seems like the total package, but Calder needs to be sure that he is in love with her, and not her money. Adam and Calder share a similar sense of humour, quick wit and personality, making it hard not to feel their chemistry as a couple. We follow the pair from their first accidental meeting where we see them progress from flirty to passionate and grow to something more as they try to get an honest feel for who the other actually is beneath the money, social statures and family ties.

The characters depicted in this novel are lively and have a depth to them that provides intrigue and a want to know more. Mary J. Williams has certainly laid the proper ground work to entice readers to buy the next books in her Benedict sisters’ series.

I am rating One way or another, 4 out of 4 stars. The writing was intelligent but not confusing or overly focussed on minute details, which allowed for smooth and enjoyable reading. The strong bonds of sisterhood coupled with pages brimming with wit and romantic chemistry, assured this book well met its requirements for an enjoyable love story. With a perfectly combined amount of romance, humour, mystery and tragedy, One way or another is a book worth recommending to lovers of romance who appreciate just the right amount of reality peppered in throughout their stories.

“Assume the worst, never get hurt.” – The unofficial Benedict Sisters’ Motto.
