One Way or Another, which is the first book within The Sisters Quartet series by Mary J. Williams, is a wonderful read. The protagonist within this story is Calder, who is one of the four fabulous Benedict sisters. The sisters have the life that most girls dream of; they are wealthy, glamourous and powerful. Most important of all, the Benedict sisters have a strong bond and can always depend on each other. However, despite how fortunate they appear, the sisters have lives that are less than perfect. Their mother Billie is only concerned with herself and the men in her life. They each have different fathers, all of whom scarcely bother with them. Finally, the men that the Benedict sisters meet only seem to want their money and status. Their experiences with dubious characters lead to predictable trust issues, particularly with men.
Unlike Calder and her sisters, Adam Stone wasn’t born into a rich family. He relies only upon himself and has earned everything he has. Despite their differences, Calder and Adam experience a connection from the first time they meet. Their casual encounters eventually turn into something more, and the bond they have grows stronger. Adam is a gentleman, a protector, and is more than Calder expected of him. However, Adam must prove that he is serious and that he can be trusted, not only to Calder but also to her sisters. When the girls encounter yet more shady characters that threaten their family, particularly Billie’s latest fling, Ingo Hunter, Calder must determine if she can trust Adam to help, or whether he is also a sign of danger.
From the first chapter of this book, I was happy to find that Mary J. Williams has created many strong and interesting characters, which I believe is effective in making the reader want to continue. As the story developed, I became more invested in the characters. I particularly enjoyed the profound bond that was evident between the Benedict sisters. Each sister had their own distinctive individuality, which only made their connection stronger. I found it refreshing that the girls were all smart, strong and independent, and were characters that can be looked up to by younger audiences. It was also nice to learn that the sisters were hard-working and, although they could acknowledge their fortunate lives, they didn’t let old money stop them from making their own success. Despite how glamourous their lives seemed from the very beginning of the book, I was surprised to find that the sisters were relatable, and I could connect with their affection and need to protect one another.
I was also excited by the budding romance between Calder and Adam. Although their different lifestyles appear to make their relationship unexpected, I liked how good of a match they were. The ‘opposites attract’ scenario was expertly written by Williams. The book had the perfect balance of romance and mystery, which made it an easy but stimulating read. One Way or Another was left on a skilful cliff-hanger, which encouraged me to want to read the next book in the series. I would recommend this book to most audiences, as it focuses on many important aspects of life; family, romance and protecting those you love from danger.
I came across very little grammar errors, meaning I would continue the series and recommend this book to others. I therefore give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. One Way or Another was a pleasurable read and I enjoyed being introduced to the exciting lives of the Benedict sisters.
