It explores child molestation, family dysfunction, and poverty from the innocent perspective of a child. The darkness of reality hides more frightening entities than the paranormal.

I couldn't agree more! Real people and real circumstances bring the horror to this story. I realise the paranormal content of the book is important to the plot but for me it can't seem worse than the suffering that real people cause to children, in whatever country or era.
