Definitely needs to be a balance. Too much self criticism and you'll become discouraged and start doubting yourself to the point where you get nothing done. Too little, and your craft suffers from lack of improvement.

I find a healthy dose of confidence can help in terms of keeping a fire lit under your butt. Knowing that you have much to learn but being confident that you'll continue to write and read was super important in keeping me productive.

Being confident is certainly necessary to even write and put out your work, alongside not allowing people to change it to their preferences. However, one must be critical of yourself, or your work will never improve because you never think it's bad.
