I think it sounds good so far. I'm curious about the reasons for the war though...maybe you could expound that and I like secrets that seems like it could be a very interesting plot point. I'd say work on ironing out your plot and maybe give it more legs. You know, so that the entire body of work isn't being held up by war, casualty, and a secret. Good catches but, if there's nothing below the surface on that, it's going to be harder to write.
