I use to just use the paper and pen until my wrist surgery then I was using Microsoft word but it resulted in having too many documents so I looked into a software that could store my character profiles, plotting ideas, notes and etc. all in one document. I came across Scrivener and tried the trial version which I loved but it expired. It was a bit pricey and I thought long and hard about it but when I decided I was serious about writing, I figured that the first real step would be to invest in something that would show how serious and dedicated I am. I went ahead and purchased Scrivener just recently after a long, long debate. It's a Godsend. You have everything in one document and not multiple word documents.
