A Novel in 30 Days

Post by cmp librarian »

Hello writers.
I just read an article in the American Libraries magazine that I found fascinating. Has anyone ever heard of National Novel Writing month? It abbreviated NaNoWriMo and actually has a following, you can be a member or attend workshops etc.

(mod note: link removed)

The organization and several libraries across the country have begun partnering together to help aspiring writers complete the the task of writing a novel. The slogan is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I'm a beginning writer, so I don't know about anyone else but that seems a daunting task. But the workshops and support they offer looks like it might be helpful... so anyone who is struggling with writers block or needs encouragement to complete their next chapter should look up the organization and the article.... it might help.

Hmmmm..... I mean it is possible, but people shouldn't be dismayed if they can't in 30 days. And honestly... it wont be finished. You might have a very rough first draft finished... unless you are some kind of prodigy. Everyone is different in their writing speeds. While it might be an excellent exercise and a good way to jump start your writing.... it isn't the method I would recommend. It promotes impatience and instant gratification. Which are two things writers should do without or it will be a very painful and most likely given up road.

And you might want to be careful about posting links like that. You might get flagged for promoting. Especially since leading a thread with some.

But it would be fun to hold a challenge here. Where people can pledge to try it... and then report back about their various struggles, etc.

I'm not trying to promote... the librarian in me likes to know where information is coming from... and if what a person is saying about something is valid... I only included the links because it is what I would want someone else to do if they were sharing this type of information..... I didn't realize it was a problem. :-(

On another note it would be fun to hold a challenge here and see what people experienced.

I do the same thing. It is no big deal. I have to catch myself too. I tried to post an image link once that I had found from a google image search... I hadn't paid attention to the link itself. And I got fussed at by the automatic system because the image was hosted at amazon. haha. I think all they do is warn you and maybe lock the thread or something?

I didn't mean to alarm you. I just wanted to give you a heads up. haha

Sometimes I'll say PM me for link... or just quote things with a citation that doesn't include the link. Stuff like that is OK. I know it is so easy to just post the link to help people find what we are posting about instead of having to google it themselves. You were just being courteous.

Anyway! Back to the topic at hand.

I would totally do something like that if hosted here. It would be fun. Though it might need to be in the summer when I have more time. haha

I've done Nano for the past few years. November is the official Nano month, so we've already finished for this year. It's quite popular. There have been quite a few discussions from participants on these forums.
