Writing Like a River

Post by IRYS1 »

I have to agree with daclawson2's perspective. Of course, I guess it really just comes down to semantics. Whatever we call it, it's still what it is; but I really think that writer's block/chore, or whatever, is a byproduct of us thinking too much and not feeling enough about what we are writing or are going to write. He makes a good point, to me. When my feelings are flowing/over flowing, the words just come right to me, and I'm able to write them down easily. My manner of expression becomes much better, I believe. Thanks. :)

I don't know if it would really be considered writers block or not, but for a long time after losing both my parents to cancer in a very short time, (less than 2 months apart at the end of 2004), I found I was unable to put thoughts together coherently in life, let alone write them down. Just in the past month or so have I been able to pick up writing again. I have started a number of novels and have written new poems. I am so happy to be writing again, to be able to. Writing gives me the chance to share with the world and since I suffer from Agoraphobia and severe anxiety, that is a major plus for me.

I think you can't make yourself come up with good ideas, which is why people get writer's block. Good ideas just come to you.

I have had 'writers block' for like five years now. I used to write poetry all the time, it was part of who I was. And then I went to university, and I was living with two other girls in one dorm room for a year. I still wrote sometimes, usually late at night when everyone else was in bed. But, I lacked privacy, and simply couldn't write. There would always be distractions or someone asking what I was doing. And then, when I moved out, since I had taken a year off, I had gotten out of the habit of writing. And now I still can't do it. I'll start to write something and run out of words within a few minutes. I miss it.

I was actually super bored at work on Friday. And, I wrote some stuff, for the first time in... a long time. And, it is so super rusty, and I couldn't get it to work like I wanted. But, whatever.

i haven't written anything in ages. its been a couple years since i last wrote a poem or short story. some of my poems were pretty good but then i just stopped. i think it was because i was dealing with a lot of things in my life at the time and writing always reminded me of those problems because what was written was always about it. idk. but i think this summer i am going to start writing. i have 12 weeks of no classes only work and me time. i think i might be able to manage to write something.

Yes, I would have to agree - it's nonexistant. A wonderful quote on this matter of writer's block:

"I don't believe in it. All writing is difficult. The most you can hope for is a day when it goes reasonably easily. Plumbers don't get plumber's block, and doctors don't get doctor's block; why should writers be the only profession that gives a special name to the difficulty of working, and then expects sympathy for it?" ~Philip Pullman (author of The Golden Compass)

I don't really get writer's block - more like self-block or life-block => meaning that everything else gets in the way of writing - school, homework, life, myself. GRRR! Hate it.
