We are not respected until we get rich.

Writing is not for everyone and you will know if you've done it well by how effectively you convey your message to the reader. Then sit back and watch the varying responses. That's the first indication, you've touched on something transitive between you and the audience.

I kinda became an author on accident, I have a very unique perspective on things and I know there is an audience for me once I start getting some real attention. Having said that, its a lot of hard work to even get anyone to give you a chance. If you're really passionate about writing and YOU know that you have something to say, go for it. You're going to hear a lot of negative feedback before you're accepted(most good writers do, later on everyone will be buying your earlier works and praising you for the genius that they think you are). My honest advice is that you need to know you're a writer, and don't get discouraged by other people. As long as you know what you're writing is good the people will follow eventually.

I wish all the budding writers All the best.
I think you're confusing a writer for a storyteller

If somebody can write that well, I won't quibble about what to call them!

I think that everyone who has a passion for writing can be a good writer, he just needs to study a lot first and as the time progresses, he will succeed publishing a book. :) Don't give up on your dream!

I just retired and as I am sure has happened to many I have a couple of friends who think that we could write books together. I have no idea where this idea comes from!!!! I have never shown them the slightest talent in that arena. I have written grants for the government for 25 years. When I was in college, the classes I took where writing was involved were nothing to be particularly proud of, and believe me the professors agreed!!!!

My friends tell me that I have a great sense of humor, and a biting wit. I am the queen of sarcastic comments and have a great way of pulling dreary meetings out of holes. (Not always appreciated by stalwart and uber serious managers who take themselves very, very seriously.)

When I hear my friends tell me I have the potential to be a good writer, I can only assume that they are, like our mothers, always going to be saying good things about us!!!! And that they are my friends.

But I have one friend that is writing a book and she wants me to collaborate; it is a work-related type of non-fiction The other friend wants to write mysteries.

I have thought of trying to find a writing class and even joining a group that might be able to tell me one way or the other. I feel I am not writer material, but then I see some of books that are published and I wonder. Probably more that I simply don't have that much imagination and it seems to be that first and foremost that must be what is required to be a writer. (I am not talking here Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzerald who are major authors whose work is timeless, but simply any author period.)

I do see that this forum is not heavily populated, but I am still looking for some ideas; like books or types of classes. Is this a talent you have to be born with or can it be learned? I see some of my favorite authors like Janet Evanovich and just can't imagine ever having that much imagination!!!!

Any help greatly appreciated. Are my friends nuts or is it just me?!!!

You'll make more friends here if you say nice things about the forum. If you can't think of genuine nice things to say, then use your imagination!

You certainly express yourself well. It sounds like you might be a writer but not of fiction...

Or it could just be that you haven't found something that inspires you to write about yet. I wrote a book and then, in an unfortunate break-in, someone stole the 2 laptops and the (£13 for goodness' sake! They couldn't have made anymoney from it!) memory pen I'd saved it on. I couldn't bear to re-write or write something else, so I joined one of those writing courses through the mail things, just to get me started again. I didn't even finish the course, but it got my mind going again; maybe being set some topics might help spark up some ideas of your own?

Is this a talent you have to be born with or can it be learned?

My English teacher swore blind that Alexander Pope had no natural talent, but great patience, a lot of time on his hands and the absolute belief that poetry should rhyme and he did rather well. And a friend who is interested in the narrative structure and involved in writing a book pointed out that Dan Brown had no particular talent for writing and yet, by understanding how a story is supposed to work and picking the right subject matter, he made it big.

Can't hurt to give it a go :D
