Set goals and have a general idea of what you want to do. At the very least have your beginning, middle, and end fleshed out enough to connect them together. And honestly? Just throw out whatever. Even if it sounds bad as you're putting it down, it's still something. Editing is for December, after all.
I did NaNo for like 4 years in a row so I have some amount of experience, though I haven't had the time or energy in recent years to participate.
