She tried to pull on the ropes but they weren't budging. All she could was rock back and forth, hoping that if they both did it the bed might break and lower them to the floor.

She pushed against her brother with most of her weight.

"Hey, cut it out." Her brother whispered.

Then she leaned her torso forward, almost lifting him off his butt. Then back again, harder this time.

"Ah, I get it now." Brandon said softly. He pushed back, almost a little too eagerly.

They froze in shock and suddenly Brandon took a small hunting knife out his pocket and started cutting the rope to try to speed her release up. "Where'd you get that? How did you know I was here?" she asked, looking at him through the corner of her eye. "Shh, don't say anything, they will hear us." He glanced over his shoulder. The rope came loose and she rubbed her wrists to get rid of the soreness. "Come, quick!" He took a fast pace and she followed him on the tip of her toes. "Can you tell me what's goin on?", she whispered while the footsteps of heavy boots were approaching. "You remember that book you read?" he murmured back. "Which one? I read over a hundred books this year", she squinted, trying to make up with he said. "That about a bunny in the hat." The footsteps came to a halt.

They unlocked the window and fingered the bottom of the ledge, pulling up with considerable effort. It had been painted shut. Brandon ran the tip of his knife along the seem slicing through the paint in jagged strokes, all while stealing glances at the bottom of the door across the room. As the knob turned the window slide roughly up its joint. Quickly they stumbled out the window, holding the side while they lengthened their body before dropping to shorten the distance to the ground. they looked back up at the window as they hit the ground, knees still bent having sustained the impact of the fall. They saw...

She tossed the cash in the air, dispersing it into the wind over their heads. Each piece popped with a sparkle and extinguished itself raining streams of soot and smoke. Brandon looked at his sister. They were both thinking the same thing, but it was too late. the spell had already been cast.
