Don't You Just Hate When Books In A Series Are Not Numbered?

AAARGH, it just happened again! I am halfway through a book- Currant Creek Valley by a new author for me... Raeanne Thayne and in looking up more books by her I discover this book is not the first in a series! I thought it was a stand alone book! I have lost count how many times this has happened and I think it should be Publishing House Policy to ALWAYS include the number of the book [ie Book 1,Book 2,ect] don't you agree?

Totally agree. I find it particularly with crime series where there can be no sign at all there are other books and then half way through they start talking about something that doesn't quite make sense and you think "did I miss this?" and then you realise, no, they're taking about a previous book.

I like looking in the front books to investigate the order the books are written. But yes, it is very frustrating to read through the first half of a book only to discover there's pas that can be read about.

Sometimes it does bother me since I don't know what comes next, but there are some series' that there is no orer to the books. The Dark Hunter series is like that. Sure it has a starting point and the other novels somewhat play off each other, but you don't have to read them in order from "Fantasy Lover" to "Time Untime." I do like those kinds of series' that why I can read them whatever order I feel like or pick and choose which ones I want to read first.

I dislike the as well. i like to read series of books. i have done this several times where i dont know what the next book is. i read fantasy and romantic books. You have to read them in order or you wont know what happened in the book before and you get confused because you wonder " how did this person get this power?" or " when did this happen?" its very confusing and annoying when you don't know what going on.

I have done this before, it's so annoying! I like it when they put the numbers on the covers so you know. I love reading book series, but not so much when it's not from the beginning!

Absolutley!! I have been caught out so many times that when I buy a book which could be a series I google the author and title first just to make sure, sad I know.

I agree! I want to read the first Harry Bosch novel by Michael Connelly, but I can never remember the title. Same with Jo Nesbo's series. I can deduce it by looking at the 'Other works by the author' section, but a number on the spine would be much simpler!

I had that problem when I first started The Anita Blake series. There are over twenty books, and not a single number on any of them. How are you supposed to keep track?

I usually spend like twenty minutes flipping through Archer Mayor's books at the library to figure out which one I'm supposed to read next. At least he writes one a year...and you'd think I'd look up the list on my smartphone to keep track by now...

I go through alternating phases were I prefer either series or stand alone books. So when I pick up a book and expect it to be the only one of its kind I get irritated, because of course it isn't numbered or say anything about the series on the cover.

I've just published the first book in a series, and was advised to put the series number on the spine and the back cover. Unfortunately the series number was not on the front cover. I did list the number on the advertising write up, and I think that helps. Any comments?

I would think if the series number is on the spine and the back, that would be more than sufficient. Especially since you have it in the advertising. Good luck with it!
