Internet Discussion Forums for Research?

Post by ThriceLabs »

In the process of writing a book, I have sought specific input from online community members. I have not indicated to community members that I wll be using this information for a book. Should I have done so? I'm aware that if I specifically quote someone, they need to be credited. But, what about general ideas? Also, should community members be acknowledged in the preface or forward?

Thanks!

Edited to add: Not this forum.

You don't have any obligation to inform people why you are asking questions or looking for general or specific information that is not of a personal nature.

For example, if you're looking for information about Ford Mustangs built in the 60s, you don't have to say why.

If someone helps you extensively, it would be polite to tell them why you are asking, and if that person is very helpful, sure, you can acknowledge them somehow.

HOWEVER!

If the information you are gathering is of a personal nature, it is in your best interest to be upfront about why you are asking. Some people who are willing to share their stories may not want those stories published.

For example, if you ask people about their experience giving up children for adoption, that's a very personal story and you should be upfront.

You haven't said what kind of information you are gathering, so I hope this breakdown helps! If you need clarification, please include the reply here so that others may respond and/or learn.

Happy Writing!

Thank you, Kaytie. Your reply was very helpful! My book pertains to a specific lifestyle. I queried online forum members, and some, indeed, shared personal stories with me. Others were more general. If I plan to use exact details from the more personal anecdotes, I will contact members privately for permission. However, I don't intend to seek permission to use more general ideas and opinions gained from forum members. In your opinion, is this an ethically and legally correct stance?

If what you're saying (and I only reiterate for clarity on my part!) is that you will ask permission to use details and personal stories, and not bother when compiling opinions that you will generalize and remove all identifying features from (as in poll results or your own opinions about the lifestyle based on what you have learned) then I'd say you're safe.

But I am not a lawyer!

My advice in your case is to take very careful notes so that there can be no doubt in the future about your sources--who said what, and when.

And if in doubt, I would err on the side of seeking permission. Much better to cover your behind in the beginning than later, when there is money and publishing houses and reputation involved!
