So, I know it's super easy to get your book online, and I've seen a lot of people using createspace to inexpensively publish their books physically, but is their an easy, inexpensive way to self-publish your book as an audiobook? Say you have a decent reading voice, so you do that part yourself, how much would it break the bank? Is there a website that caters to this sort of thing that anyone has heard of? Just curious.

Post your solution here I'd actually like to know that! I wonder if I have the voice for that.

I have read for a service called VOICEcorps - a 24 hour broadcast service for people who cannot use standard print because of a visual impairment or physical disability. I have read several books for them and send the MP3 files by email to them. All I have is Garage Band and a microphone. I get pretty good quality out of it. It can be done!

That's interesting. I'll have to definitely look into it. Not only as an idea for my own future works, but I also used to work with an elderly woman who had to order Audiobooks from a library for the blind. It unfortunately doesn't have all the books I suggest to her, so it'd be kind of cool to be able to record some books for her now that I live far away.

Yes, I would like to know more about this too. I've been looking into self-produced albums, typically what musicians use, and I have a little bit of knowledge with which to work on possibly doing a spoken word album of my poetry and/or stories. But as far as audiobooks go, I have no idea.

Sorry if this is lengthy, but the librarian side of me kicked in. I've listened to a few, but never made any. So, I did a little digging. Audible has an option called http://www.acx.com/ in conjunction with Amazon and iTunes. If that's not quite what you're looking for, try http://goodereader.com/blog/electronic- ... -audiobook. It has multiple options and even lists some average costs for self-published audiobooks. The second site gives you suggestions on how to DIY it.

AS Kismoody pointed out, Audible is the "Audiobook" aspect for Amazon's connection to Createspace and Kindle.

Just like it's 'sister' sites, it's designed to be an inexpensive way to perform this. You have the option of uploading your own files (and they have great videos and tutorials to get the most out of your recordings) as well as being able to search through voice actors and firms to hear samples and see their pricing. It is even setup for you to take 50/50 split on sales and even then, similar to Createspace's Distribution options, you can take only 40% to broaden the markets it is available for.

ALSO ~ Check you libraries. I know here in Orlando, the downtown library has a VERY NICE recording/Sound studio that can be used for free (Limited time sessions) after taking a free tutorial/intro class on how to use the equipment. Another resource is local colleges and their students wanting a chance to be known for voice acting might have a studio on campus.

I have heard of this but didn't really look into it.

I wouldn't be able to do it myself personally, but it sounds interesting. I would like to see how it works out for some people.
