This question has been on my mind since I started writing at Fanfiction, is flashbacks a wise thing to write about? Could it be confusing to the readers or will it actually help the readers to understand the story more?

It actually depends on the placement of the flashback. If its in the beginning of a book or chapter, I would reccomend not going longer than a few pages, as it will confuse the reader. You should be fine as long as it will hold the readers attention, but make sure they eventually understand what happened

I have no problem with em when they're done right, just make sure they're separated somehow, even if you have to resort to the "2 weeks ago" format they use in movies and tv. A good flashback can really help explain things, reveal clues, etc without a long dialogue about what happened
