What's your most effective way to keep your writing fresh?

I dabble in writing, and have yet to actually finish anything. I get bored with my stories, and although I would like to finish them, I can't bring myself to actually do it. How do y'all combat this feeling?

The reasons for stalling the end is a mixture of things. Saying goodbye to characters, closing the doors on that story, the fear of never being able to start any project ever again. I wrote my first play from beginning to end when I was 13. It was actually banned from my school (and I was subsequently suspended) due to the advanced sexual content. But hey, at least I finished it, right?! Lol. It took me about 10yrs to be comfortable enough to write from an honest perspective again. Not because of the discipline I received, but because I felt like I was betraying my characters by focusing on other ones. But now that I'm older I feel like my desire for these characters to finish their story is more important than my need to be comfortable. So out of respect for them, it gets done. I realize this all sounds slightly crazy. But crazy can be okay lol. Hope that helps :)

What makes me want to finish a story is it gives me the freedom to start my next story. When I don't write or finish I feel like I'm holding my characters back. I have many other stories I want to write, but I focus on one at a time. When I begin editing my current story I will then also begin writing my next. Remember the end of a story doesn't have to mean the end of your relationship with your characters.

I make a conscious effort to force myself to write in different genres and styles; for instance, comedy, romantic, horror, war, philosophical ect. By challenging myself in this way I am forced to think "outside the box" with regard to the type of story that I might normally write. Sometimes it can be both fun and rewarding to base a story on something that would not normally appeal to me and just run with it.

The result:
None of my stuff is any good, but it stinks in many different aromas. *LOL*

Always be focus on your writing. Start with a cool mind after a tea or coffee. Write it in the evening or at night. Keep your mind calm and fresh before writing. This will help you get good ideas on writing.
