I enjoy writing and I just very recently decided to take my writing serious. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on good authors to to look into. I want to start reading a LOT and study various author's writing styles. Look at all the signature traits each different author puts into their literature. Just to see how good authors put their work together. I'm also wondering if anyone has any suggestions for books that would help me improve my writing skills. If anyone knows anything let me know? Thanks.

It really depends on your style of writing. Years ago, I read an article on Writer's Digest which talked about having your own writing mentor--an author that you admire and whose writing style would be similiar to your own. In the past, writers that I have used as my "writing mentor" have been Sandra Cisneros, Margaret Atwood, and Amy Tan. Their writing tend to be full of lush descriptions and imagery. But that's the style that I love. My suggestion to you would be to read different writers and decide whose style best reflects how you envision your writing. If you do that, I'm sure you'll develop a style all your own.
