Most of my novels doesn't sell at all. As i cannot express my 300 page book in few sentences. And so i cannot know it, it factors this much. But I started with sypnosis and continue writing along it. It was much helpful.

The synopsis is usually what ends up selling me the book. If the synopsis doesn't interest me, then I don't usually find that the book wll either.

I took a writing class once that had us boil down a novel to elevator pitches. If you took an elevator with [person you desperately want to read your book], how would you sell it in the space of an elevator ride?

For example:
Harry Potter - an abused orphan boy finds out he is a wizard and escapes to a new world

Little Women - a slice of life story of four sisters as they grow up in the late 19th century

I agree that most of the books I buy are based on the synopsis. Although it is difficult to sum up the whole novel into a few sentences, I would recommend highlight some of the most intense points of the novel and trying to create some feelings of suspense to really get the reader to buy the book!
