I think most people do want to be heard. I also think that it is as important to listen and hear others and not get too fixated on your own voice. I have often been accused of constantly "teaching" when I share my thoughts whether in writing or through verbal communications. I have looked back over some of my posts and it is indeed true. The quote you listed is one my principal has often quoted and I believe it is true. When I share my thoughts, I hope they convey a message worth reading or hearing. I truly am trying to share but it can come off as overbearing. The question becomes, "how do you convey that you care?"

I think you have already answered your question, listening implies an interest in what another has to say it has some measure of importance to us, perhaps just curiosity or superficial entertainment, these are fleeting moments that don't carry any weight, but when we are intrigued we open up, we care enough to share our thoughts.
