You could write a letter introducing yourself - a brief bio of who you are and why you have written your book. Include who your target audience is and what you would like to achieve by publishing the book (I mean "entertain" "change lives" etc. - not "increase my bank balance"!

).
One of the most important things to go in that letter is a synopsis of your book - something that will pique the curiosity of the publisher and make them want to look at your manuscript.
You do not need to send your whole manuscript with an initial contact letter. You can send a portion of what you have written, but make it enough that it makes sense. i.e. First chapter, a summary of middle chapters, the last chapter.
If your work is still in progress, send your best representation and a summary of what you intend for the completion of the story.
Also Angel, there are books you can get from the library about writing and approaching publishing companies.

Good point. In fact, most agents would not want to receive an unsolicited manuscript, and might disregard it for that reason. You send a letter first. Also, one usually sends an outline before sending a whole manuscript, but that's also because writer's usually get a publishing deal before writing their book.
